Alopecia areata, also known as spot baldness, is a condition in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body. It often results in a few bald spots on the scalp, each about the size of a coin. Psychological stress and illness are possible factors in bringing on alopecia areata in individuals at risk, but in most cases there is no obvious trigger. People are generally otherwise healthy. In a few cases, all the hair on the scalp is lost, or all body hair is lost. Hair loss can be permanent, or temporary.

अलोपेसिया अरीटा (अंग्रेज़ी: Alopecia areata), जिसको स्पॉट बाल्डनेस एक ऑटोइम्यून रोग हैंI जिसमें सर के कुछ या संपूर्ण हिस्से से बाल झड़ जाते हैं। इसमें बाल ज्यादातर सिर की त्वचा से ही झड़ते हैं क्यूंकि इसमें शरीर, स्वयं को ही पहचानना छोड़ देता हैं एवं अपने ही ऊतकों को नष्ट कर डालता हैं, जैसे की वो कोई आक्रमणकारी हो। प्रथम चरण में यह सर पर बाल रहित क्षेत्रों का निशान बना देता हैंI 1-2 % मामलों में यह सारे शरीर में एवं पूरे एपिडर्मिस में फ़ैल जाता हैं। अलोपेसिया अरीटा जैसी हालात एवं होने के कारण अन्य प्रजातियों में भी पाई जाती हैं।
